Rock music icon Gregg Allman, best known as a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, passed away at the age of 69. His manager, Michael Lehman, shared that Allman chose to keep his health struggles private, continuing to play music until he physically couldn’t anymore.
A Musical Journey Rooted in the South
Gregory Lenoir Allman was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and later moved to Daytona, Florida. Alongside his older brother Duane, Gregg developed a passion for music early on. The duo first gained recognition as “Hour Glass” before founding The Allman Brothers Band, which achieved major success in the 1970s.
Tragically, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971, just as the band was reaching the peak of its success. Despite this loss, the band continued and released the critically acclaimed album Brothers and Sisters in 1973. Gregg Allman also embarked on a solo career, debuting with the album Laid Back.
A Personal Life as Colorful as His Music
Gregg Allman’s life was marked by numerous marriages, including a high-profile union with Cher. He had five children and remained a pivotal figure in the Southern rock genre, earning the nickname “Southern Rock Pioneer.”
Despite being diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2007 and undergoing a liver transplant in 2010, Allman continued to perform. His love for music never waned, even as his health deteriorated. He maintained his passion for performing, driven by a deep belief in the power of music.
The Final Years and Lasting Legacy
In August 2017, Allman announced he was receiving care at the Mayo Clinic, hinting at a serious condition that led to the cancellation of his remaining shows for the year. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, with liver cancer cited as the cause.
Gregg Allman was laid to rest beside his brother Duane at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, fulfilling one of his last wishes. His music continues to resonate with fans old and new, ensuring that his legacy endures long after his passing.
